India's Ascent in the Skies: The Rapid Rise of its Aviation Sector

date_rangeNovember 3, 2023

In the realm of aviation, India is leading the charge with an order book that eclipses all others globally. Its top carriers are on a shopping spree, with nearly 1,000 jets on order, channeling billions into the aviation industry's coffers. The growth trajectory is set high at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is gearing up to handle a staggering 109 million travelers next year, positioning it just behind the bustling Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Yet, this is a country where train compartments outnumber airplane cabins by a wide margin. Despite this, the grand scale of India's aviation ambitions is clear, designed to cater to the upwardly mobile middle class whose aspirations are sky-high. Airports in India aren’t just transit points; they're monuments to progress.

For the vast majority in India, flying is still a distant dream, with regular flyers making up a mere 3 percent of its populous. But in a nation brimming with over a billion souls, this sliver equates to 42 million people – a considerable cohort of professionals and dreamers eager to shrink the distances within and beyond their homeland for work and leisure.

"The next two to three years critical for achieving the quality of growth that India desires and deserves," says Kapil Kaul, the CEO of CAPA India, an aviation consultancy. Indian aviation has scaled heights without the profits, but now, it's time for the industry to demonstrate its profit-making prowess. The industry's expansion is anticipated to ripple positively through the Indian economy, bolstering cargo and foreign investment, remarks Mr. Kaul.

Upon arrival at Indira Gandhi Airport, travelers are welcomed by towering sculptural hands in ancient Buddhist mudras, symbolizing a blend of timelessness and innovation. Since these installations debuted in 2012, passenger numbers have soared. As the airport braces for further growth, another one rises on the city's opposite end.

A testament to the sector's growth are the behemoths Boeing and Airbus, both of which are reaping the rewards of India's aviation appetite. Deals like Air India's colossal order with both aircraft manufacturers underscore the booming market.

Meanwhile, low-cost carriers, fueled by domestic demand and a taste for international travel, are stitching new destinations into the Indian traveler’s tapestry. Delhi and Mumbai's air routes already bustle amongst the world's busiest, and their airports boast facilities to rival any in the West. The infrastructural boom extends beyond these megacities, touching even the remotest parts.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the number of Indian airports has doubled, with an ambitious target set for the next decade. The government's hefty investment is transforming air travel, democratizing access to the skies for cities like Darbhanga. For residents here, like Prasanna Kumar Jha, this connectivity is not just convenience but a necessity, dramatically altering their travel landscape.

Yet, in stark contrast to the sprawling complexes like New Delhi’s, smaller airports like Darbhanga's maintain a humble but functional charm. Passengers like Ajay Jha, who traverse the globe for reunions back home, embody the transformative power of this aviation leap.

While India’s average earnings may not yet reflect a universal affluence, the sparse number of passenger seats per capita compared to other nations speaks of untapped potential. With the aviation market concentrated between a few powerful players, the scene is ripe for growth but not without its challenges, including the recent insolvency of carriers and pilot shortages impacting newcomers like Akasa Air.

But these are growing pains in an otherwise flourishing sector. India's aviation boom isn't just reshaping its skies; it's poised to redefine the global aviation landscape, promising a ripple effect that could extend well beyond the runways.
