On International Happiness Day, March 20th, the organization offered several freebies for tourists and locals alike, including free city tours on a Happiness Bus, commuter gifts on public transport, and free taxi rides for 100 random passengers at the Dubai International Airport. Advertising like this takes some planning, but it is highly effective, as the experiment in Dubai showed.

Dubai International Airport Draws Attention with Huge Gingerbread Burj Khalifa

If you’re traveling through the Dubai International Airport this holiday season, you’ll have a chance to check out the massive reproduction of the Burj Khalifa . . . in gingerbread. Created by the Address Dubai Marina, the 14 meter gingerbread structure is smack dab in the middle of Concourse B, in Terminal 3. It’s a whole new idea in airport advertising, go big or go home.

Airport adverting involves making an impact and that has certainly been the case with the gingerbread Burj Khalifa. Everyone is talking about the display and behind it all, the marina is standing tall and getting noticed. To create the impressive display, 30,000 cookie panels were baked from 180 kg of flour and 23 kg of ginger powder. It’s entirely edible, held together by more than 1,600 kg of icing sugar and 216 liters of honey. Lights, gifts and cute little gingerbread chalets surround the giant gingerbread building, making it even more festive.

When it comes to advertising in airports, the gingerbread structure is a great example of how thinking outside the box can garner more attention. Most advertisers wouldn’t attempt this type of marketing campaign, but going above and beyond the usual banners, wall wraps and digital displays can be a fun way to engage visitors. Not only did news agencies pick up the story, but the cookie structure has become a social media sensation.
